Begin a Georgia inmate search at the sheriff's office for the county where the arrest took place. County sheriffs manage local detention centers throughout the state, so a person just arrested goes to a county jail before anywhere else. You can phone the booking desk or look at the sheriff's roster online to verify custody and bond rules. When someone is serving a state sentence already, look in the state prison database instead.

Georgia county jails

County sheriffs operate the local jails in Georgia. As an example, the Fulton County Sheriff's Office Jail Division runs its jail with 2 divisions, Administration and Operations, under a Chief Jailer.

Every sheriff takes care of booking, records, and release within that county:

Georgia jail rosters

A separate online lookup is kept by each sheriff. Through the sheriff's Zuercher portal, the Houston County Inmate Search lets you find current inmates by name. The Charles B. Webster Detention Center in Richmond County lets you look up recent bookings with a first and last name, and results show race, sex, age, and the arrest date.

Booking rules and update speeds also vary. Anyone who doesn't bond out goes before a judge in 24 hours or less, and the Fulton County Jail roster refreshes 1 time per day. In a holding area, detainees get phone access at the Gwinnett County Jail, where staff must complete booking before you can post bond. A daily update won't show an arrest from the last few hours yet, so call the jail directly.

Georgia bail bond laws

Under OCGA 17-6-1, together with S.B. 407, a court must weigh ability to pay and, as soon as possible, set bail. The Judicial Council of Georgia bench card on misdemeanor bail explains that S.B. 402 plus S.B. 63 drew a line between secured bail and unsecured judicial release, letting someone go home without paying money first.

Georgia offers these release options:

  • Release on your own recognizance, or unsecured judicial release.
  • Cash bond, for which Cobb, DeKalb, and Fulton counties charge a non-refundable $20 fee per bond.
  • Property the county sheriff has approved.
  • Under OCGA 17-6-50, a professional bondsman provides a bail bond, and the fee you pay to a bail agent is called a premium.

For people with bail-restricted offenses, the only ways out are a professional bondsman, approved property, or secured means. Compare your options by reading about the bail process.

Questions and answers

How can I check if someone is being held in a Georgia jail?

Use the sheriff's online roster for the county of the arrest, for example DeKalb County Jail inmate lookup, or phone the booking desk. Another choice: check the Charles B. Webster Detention Center or call Georgia VINE at 1-833-216-6670 for 24/7 help locating an offender.

When does a new arrest show up on a Georgia jail roster?

Fulton County's roster refreshes just 1 time per day, and a new arrest won't appear until staff finish fingerprinting, photos, health screenings, and intake records. The Charles B. Webster Detention Center and other jails take inmates in and release them day and night, even if someone isn't listed online yet.

Call a bail agent (not the jail)

This line reaches a bail agent who can talk you through a bond in Georgia. It is not the jail and not a government office.
