After an arrest, begin an Indiana inmate search with the jail roster of the county where the person was taken into custody. The state offender search covers many counties, but Marion County isn't one of them, so you must use the separate Indianapolis lookup tool. When your family member is serving time in state prison, you'll instead need the locator from the Department of Correction. Call the jail directly if the arrest was only a few hours ago.

Indiana county jails

Local jails across Indiana are run by county sheriffs or the jail administrators they choose. A county can also hold people after an arrest in a privately contracted detention facility. Indiana makes the rules and checks these facilities under the county jail standards, part of Title 210, Article 3 in the administrative code.

Within Indianapolis, the Marion County Sheriff's Office runs the Marion County Adult Detention Center. In-person bond payment is available at the Community Justice Campus, 675 Justice Way, between 8 a.m. and midnight. After a transfer, personal property must be collected within 30 days.

Indiana jail rosters

Many local jails can be checked together through the state offender search for Indiana. Or visit a county sheriff's site directly, such as the Vigo County Sheriff inmate lookup.

That statewide jail roster doesn't show Indianapolis bookings. The Marion County Inmate Lookup Tool is the site to check for that. You can search by first and last name or an identification number, and released inmates can be included:

  • Booking number or permanent number
  • County ID or state ID
  • ICE number or FBI number

Call the jail directly if the arrest was in the last few hours; new arrivals need time to appear during the jail booking process.

Indiana bail bonds

Under the Indiana Pretrial Services Rules, with updates effective April 14, 2026, Indiana courts use 4 release options:

  • Recognizance, which means promising to return to court with no money paid in advance
  • A cash bond or a property bond, paid straight to the jail or the court
  • A surety bond is a bail bond that an insurance company backs through a bail agent

When you work with a bail agent, the fee you pay the agent is called a premium. Indiana Code 27-10-1-4 and 27-10-1-8 says a premium is a check, United States currency, or a credit card payment you give the agent before the bond is executed. No fixed percentage is set by state law. Bail agents get their licenses from the Indiana Department of Insurance. Every bond in Marion County carries a $5 Death Benefit Fee, and paying online through GovPayNow adds an 8.5% fee.

Questions and answers

Where can I look to see if someone is in jail in Indiana?

First, use the sheriff's lookup for the county where the arrest took place, because county sheriffs are the ones who hold new arrestees. When the arrest took place in Indianapolis, use the city's own lookup tool, since Marion County doesn't appear on the state jail roster. You can also call 1-866-959-8463 at any hour for phone help.

When does a new arrest appear on an Indiana jail roster?

A new arrest appears online only after jail staff have entered the booking information into the county system. When an arrest is recent and the name hasn't shown up on the roster, call the jail desk directly. You can also dial 1-866-959-8463 for 24-hour assistance.
