- State-runThese pages don't identify who operates local jails. What they show is that county jails are separate from state prisons and that SAVAN connects to every North Carolina jail. Although bail statutes mention surrendering defendants to the county sheriff, the pages don't name sheriffs as the operators.

Begin your North Carolina inmate search with the county sheriff's online roster for the place where the arrest happened. State prisons and county jails in North Carolina are separate. When you don't know the county holding the person, the statewide notification system lets you check every local jail at once. If the arrest just happened in the past few hours, phone the jail itself, since staff must complete booking before a name appears online.
North Carolina county jails
In North Carolina, county jails and state prisons are separate, and each local jail is tied into the statewide notification system. Surrendering defendants to the county sheriff is mentioned in state bail laws.
These local facilities are run by county sheriff's offices. Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office runs Mecklenburg County Detention Center Central. It also runs Detention Center North plus a Juvenile Detention Center, and the Arrest Processing Center is inside Central. John H. Baker, Jr. Public Safety Center and Wake County Detention Center together make up the 2 sites run by Wake County Sheriff's Office. Two more options are Durham County Detention Facility and Lincoln County Detention Center; each county sheriff's office runs its own site.
North Carolina jail rosters
Online lookups are run separately by each county sheriff. The Durham County Detention Facility lets you look through current records or lists covering the past 24 hours or 30 days. You'll see charges, the confinement date, bond type and amount, days in jail, and the court docket.
Searching by arrest number or by first and last name works on the Mecklenburg County Detention Center Central roster. Records stay online for 3 years, and its Resident Inquiry shows mug shots. The Henderson County Detention Center offers a Citizen Connect portal and a mobile app. Both let you filter by charge, custom dates, arresting agency, the past 24 hours, or 7 days. Once the jail booking process is finished, inmates there get phone access. If the arrest is very recent, call the jail directly.
North Carolina Department of Corrections inmate search
The state prison system is run by the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, or NCDAC. You can look someone up by name or by offender ID with the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction locator.
State prison offenders, probationers, and parolees are covered by that tool. The agency says on its criminal offender searches page that county jail information isn't included. Someone arrested last night will be waiting for court in a county jail. Only use the NCDAC search when someone is serving time in state prison or is under state supervision.
North Carolina VINELink
If you don't know the jail where someone is held, search North Carolina VINE. The Statewide Automated Victim Assistance and Notification program is known as North Carolina SAVAN. North Carolina runs it via the Department of Adult Correction on Appriss's VINE platform.
Every North Carolina jail and state prison is linked into SAVAN. Free notifications are available when an inmate's status changes, and custody status can be checked online. The SAVAN toll free line at 1-877-627-2826 is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and you can call 1-866-719-0108 for local questions.
North Carolina bail bonds
Under General Statute 15A-534, judicial officials set the conditions for pretrial release. For violent charges, the starting presumption is against release, and it can be challenged; the court holds the person unless proof changes that. Possible release choices:
- Release on recognizance is one option; an unsecured appearance bond is another. Both put a promise to appear in writing, with nothing paid upfront.
- A full cash deposit, or else a mortgage, can secure an appearance bond.
- A bond secured through a premium or through at least 1 surety who is solvent, meaning the full amount is guaranteed by a bondsman.
Under G.S. 58-71, the Commissioner of Insurance licenses professional, surety, and accommodation bondsmen. General Statutes 58-71-95 caps the premium, the fee paid to a bail bondsman, at 15% of the bond. When the surety hands the defendant over before any breach, the full fee must come back within 72 hours, unless a listed exception applies. If the bond is reduced, no refund is required.
Questions and answers
How can I check whether someone is in a North Carolina jail?
Check the sheriff's online roster for the county where the arrest took place, or search all North Carolina jails at once through SAVAN. In Mecklenburg County, you can call 704-336-8100 for details on how to pay a bond once you find the person's record.
When will the North Carolina jail roster show a new arrest?
After booking, a new arrest appears online; that is also when Henderson County Detention Center inmates first get phone use. A recent booking question can go to the main line at the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office on weekdays, with the office open from 8 to 5.

Call a bail agent (not the jail)
This line reaches a bail agent who can talk you through a bond in North Carolina. It is not the jail and not a government office.
