A Rhode Island inmate search can begin easily because the state operates 1 unified system for jail and prison. There's no need to guess which county sheriff arrested your person. No jails in this state are operated by counties or local sheriffs. Every arrested person and every sentenced prisoner is held by the state at Cranston's Adult Correctional Institutions. To learn where someone is being held tonight, you can use the state's online lookup tool, dial the automated phone line, or try the victim notification service.

Does Rhode Island have county jails?

No. Jails in this state aren't run by counties or local sheriffs. A unified state correctional system is run by the Rhode Island Department of Corrections, which oversees itself. So 1 state agency holds every arrested person, plus anyone serving a court sentence, no matter the crime or sentence length.

After an arrest anywhere in the state, police bring the person to Cranston's Adult Correctional Institutions. Everyone newly arrived is taken to the Intake Service Center at the Rhode Island Adult Correctional Institutions, located in Providence County. People waiting for court are held at this facility, which the state corrections department runs. Inside the building, anyone in custody can use a Securus phone to dial 444 and learn their release date if a date applies.

Rhode Island jail rosters

The state manages every detention facility together, so there's only 1 statewide roster to check. You can look someone up on the Rhode Island Department of Corrections Inmate Search from your phone or computer. You must read the website disclaimer and agree to it before the search page will open.

New bookings take time to show up online, so if a friend or family member got arrested within the last few hours, phone the facility directly. Bond information for a person in the Intake Service Center can come from the bail information number or the automated phone line. You can get a clearer picture of those early intake hours by reading about the jail booking process.

Rhode Island bail bonds

R.I. General Laws § 12-13-10 sets out 3 ways courts can release a person entitled to bail:

  • A personal recognizance release, where the person promises to come back to court with no money posted.
  • Surety, where an approved third party guarantees the bail amount to the court.
  • A deposit of 10% of the full bail amount paid straight to the court.

Changes to state law under P.L. 2023, ch. 267 and ch. 266 took effect on June 22, 2023. These rules make surety or the 10% court deposit the only money-based conditions of release. A court may not require cash-only bail unless the defendant owes court-imposed restitution. Bail rules in the state also draw on R.I. Constitution, Art. 1, § 9, plus R.I. General Laws §§ 12-13-16, 12-13-16.1, 12-13-16.2, plus 12-25-28.

Questions and answers

How can I check whether someone is in a Rhode Island jail?

Use the online RIDOC inmate search after agreeing to the website disclaimer, or call the toll-free RI-VINE line at 1-877-744-8463. Because all arrested people go to the state's Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston, you never have to check separate county sheriff lists.

How much time passes before a new arrest appears on a Rhode Island jail roster?

A new arrival only appears on the online RIDOC search after staff at the Travisono Intake Service Center finish booking. When an arrest just happened, check bond by calling the automated line or bail information number. Or have the person in custody call 444 on a Securus phone to learn any release date already scheduled.

Call a bail agent (not the jail)

This line reaches a bail agent who can talk you through a bond in Rhode Island. It is not the jail and not a government office.

1-844-343-6285

This call from County Jail Lookup goes to a bail agent, not the jail, and may be recorded so the agent keeps an exact note of the bond you asked about.
