Maine inmate search

Jail system
State-runThese facilities are county jails, so the state DOC doesn't run them. Since the York County Jail falls under the York County Sheriff's Office, it appears county sheriffs operate the jails. York is the only one listed, so this isn't confirmed for the whole state.

A Maine inmate search begins with the local county jail. Right after an arrest, people are held in a county jail. The state prison system isn't in charge of these local facilities. You can ask the county jail itself if your family member is there. Maine VINE is a free service, online or by phone, that you can also use to locate a person being held. When an arrest took place within the last few hours, phone the jail desk itself.

Maine county jails

In Maine, county facilities serve as the local jails. Local jails are not operated by the Maine Department of Corrections. Under mandatory state jail standards and inspections, counties manage their own detention centers instead.

The York County Sheriff's Office includes the York County Jail, for example. Officers take the person to the local county jail for booking after an arrest.

State and county systems are separate, so someone held on a new arrest remains in county custody. To get custody details, you'll need to reach out to the county jail where the arrest happened.

Rosters for Maine jails

Since local facilities aren't run by the state, custody records are kept by each county. Look at the county's own roster first, or reach out to the jail directly. County staff can tell you whether your person is there.

You can also use Maine VINE to look for an offender. It lets you search online or call 1-866-358-0005 for help locating someone at any hour.

Following an arrest, intake paperwork and booking at the jail take a while. Call the jail itself when booking happened within the last few hours; recent arrests need time to appear online.

Maine bail with no bondsman involved

Commercial bail bondsmen aren't used; pretrial release follows the Maine Bail Code. Title 15, Section 1026 has a judicial officer consider personal recognizance or an unsecured appearance bond first. Under personal recognizance, a person promises in writing to come to court and pays nothing first. With an unsecured appearance bond, the person promises to pay money only if a court date is missed.

Financial conditions are limited by state law. Most Class E crimes can't carry them. The court can require the following when a judicial officer orders extra conditions:

  • A designated person or organization takes custody.
  • Forfeiture of money or designated property.
  • Other people guarantee the bond amount through a bail bond with sureties.

Questions and answers

How can I check whether someone is in a Maine jail?

The county jail where the arrest happened is the one to call, as local jails aren't state run. You can also call the Maine VINE support line at 1-866-358-0005 at any hour to get help locating an offender. Use the MDOC online search for someone whose state sentence or community supervision is already underway.

When does a new arrest show up on a Maine jail roster?

Only after local jail staff finish intake paperwork does a new arrest show up. That county's booking desk is what the timing depends on, since each county jail operates apart from the state. Calling the county jail or the Maine VINE line at 1-866-358-0005 day or night is the fastest way to check on a recent arrest.
