Your Washington, DC inmate search starts with checking a single unified agency. Counties and county sheriff jails don't exist in the District of Columbia. Everyone held on local charges goes to one central city department. You can look up custody status online using the District's portal for notifications, or call the records office. For an arrest from the past few hours, you shouldn't wait for the website. Instead, phone the records clerk.

County jails in Washington, DC

The District of Columbia has no counties, so county sheriff jails don't exist there. One local agency manages detention across the District instead. The entire local jail system is run by the DC Department of Corrections.

For people held locally, this department runs 2 facilities. The Central Detention Facility is the main building, and most people call it the DC Jail. The Correctional Treatment Facility is the second building.

One agency runs both locations, so you don't have to figure out which sheriff handled the arrest. The agency's website posts visitation rules covering both facilities.

Washington, DC jail rosters

The District doesn't post a scrollable web list of everyone in the DC Jail or the Correctional Treatment Facility, unlike many states. Instead, the jail system shares inmate locations through a custody lookup portal plus direct phone support.

You can check the roster for someone today in 2 steps:

  • Use the District's portal to check custody status online.
  • Call the jail's central records office at 202-523-7060 for general inmate information.

When an arrest is only a few hours old, phone the jail directly, since new bookings don't show online right away. Staff must finish the booking steps before the computer shows a person's name.

Inmate search through the Washington, DC Department of Corrections

For the city, custody lookups are handled by the District of Columbia Department of Corrections, or the DOC. With a unified District system, you can skip checking county jail databases and state prison databases separately. The DOC runs the DC Jail as well as the Correctional Treatment Facility.

When you open the DOC locate an inmate page, you won't see a name search box on that site. Instead, you get general inmate information by calling the Department's Records Office at 202-523-7060.

The DOC also gives families the Victim Notification Everyday page, which offers online tracking covering anyone in District custody.

Bail in Washington, DC with no bail bondsman

Commercial bail bondsmen play no part in how the District handles release. A judge must release someone on an unsecured appearance bond or personal recognizance, as § 23-1321 of the D.C. Code requires. That applies whenever it keeps the community safe and gets the person to court. With personal recognizance, no money is paid upfront; you simply promise to return to court. With an unsecured appearance bond, a dollar fee is owed only when the person misses a court date.

A federal office, the Pretrial Services Agency, proposes release terms and monitors compliance. If a promise alone won't do, the judge picks conditions that are the least restrictive. Choices include a bond with solvent sureties or an agreement to forfeit money or property. Solvent sureties are backers whose assets are enough to cover it. Detention remains possible under § 23-1322 and § 23-1325, but judges can't set financial conditions to assure safety or to cause preventive detention.
