A Minnesota inmate search starts with the jail roster in the county where the arrest occurred. There's no single statewide jail list in Minnesota. When you're unsure which county is holding the person, Minnesota VINE lets you check local custody. If the person is doing a state prison term, the state corrections locator is the tool to use instead. Call the jail directly if the arrest happened within the last few hours.

Minnesota county jails

Handling local custody falls to local corrections, jail administration, or law enforcement. According to the Minnesota Judicial Branch Pretrial Release Initiative, these agencies also carry out pretrial evaluations. To help a judge set release terms, a pretrial evaluation reviews the case after an arrest.

Also known as the Adult Detention Center, the Hennepin County Jail is run by the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. Hennepin County Public Safety Facility and Minneapolis City Hall are the 2 buildings it occupies, and they face each other across the street. Cash bail or bond is accepted at the Public Safety Facility 24 hours a day, all 7 days of the week. Exact cash and the case or warrant number are what you need to bring. There's no cash machine at the desk, and no change is given. The sheriff's office will never call you demanding payment, either.

Minnesota jail rosters

No statewide county jail roster exists in Minnesota. Search the county-run roster, or go through VINE. Rules and update times are set by each county on its own.

Every hour, for example, the Hennepin County Jail roster gets updated. Anyone released in the last 7 days appears too, along with people currently in the jail. Charges, bail amounts, and scheduled court dates are shown as well.

A name that doesn't show up yet may mean the person is still in the jail booking process. New bookings take time to show online, so call the jail directly if the arrest was in the last few hours.

Minnesota bail bonds

Judges in Minnesota can order a few different kinds of release:

  • A personal recognizance release or own recognizance
  • Nonmonetary conditions following a speedy trial demand, or conditional release
  • A bail bond, or cash bail only

With a bail bond, a company guarantees the defendant will show up for their court date. You'll pay a fee for that bond, and that fee is the premium. Minnesota House Research on bail says registration with the Department of Commerce is required for companies. The state court administrator's office in the judicial branch must also approve their producers.

The surety's filed rate is what producers charge under Minnesota Statutes section 60M.02, capped at 10 percent of the bail, with $100 as the minimum. No rebates are permitted. When the court's cash bail comes to 15 percent of the bond or less, the fee can equal half of that cash bail. Bonds up to $10,000 require a minimum of 50 percent of the premium up front, and bonds over $10,000 require 30 percent.

Questions and answers

How do I check whether someone is in jail in Minnesota?

Look up the jail roster online for the county where the arrest occurred. You can also call 877-664-8463 to search local jails statewide through Minnesota VINE. The MNDOC Public Viewer is the place to check when someone is serving a state prison sentence.

What's the wait before a new arrest appears on a Minnesota jail roster?

The county's update schedule and the length of booking set the wait time. Every hour, Hennepin County updates its online roster. After intake is done and the next hourly update runs, the new arrest shows up.
