Your Michigan inmate search begins at the county jail where the arrest took place. The counties operate local jails, and the state operates the prisons. For a recent arrest, look at that county sheriff's online roster first. Don't expect a new booking to show on your screen right away. If the person isn't listed yet, call the jail. To find someone in state prison, you'll use the state system instead.

Michigan county jails

After an arrest in Michigan, you'll look at the local jails, since counties operate them. Within Monroe County, the Sheriff's Office Corrections Division operates the local jail. Before court, police take people they've just arrested to these county jails for booking.

Local jail rules are set by each sheriff. Oakland County Jail is run by Oakland County Sheriff's Office. Its bonding area is open 24 hours a day for you. Wayne County Criminal Justice Center is operated by Wayne County Sheriff's Office, and it includes a Juvenile Detention Facility too. There, before release, new arrivals must clear the Jail Registry Unit

Michigan jail rosters

Each county has its own lookup tool, so the steps you take depend on the jail. Searching the Oakland County Jail roster means going to the CLEMIS Inmate Locator, choosing Oakland County Jail, and running the search. That county says its records may be as much as 72 hours out of date. Take charge and bond questions to the court of jurisdiction.

Other counties want dates or numbers from you. With the Wayne County Jail roster, you look up a booking number or booking dates, and there's a housing unit filter. When an arrest took place only a few hours ago, phone the jail directly. Before a name shows up, jail booking takes time.

Michigan bail bonds

Michigan generally gives an accused person the right to bail that isn't excessive. Several options are available to a court under MCR 6.106 and Michigan's pretrial release rules:

  • Interim bond or conditional release
  • A standard bond or money bail
  • A deposit bond of 10%
  • A surety bond through a court approved surety
  • Refusal of pretrial release

With a surety bond, a bail bondsman posts a guarantee. The fee you pay that agent is called the premium. If a court permits a 10% deposit bond, MCL 765.6b and MCL 765.6 let you put up a surety bond at 1/4 of the full bail instead. People who post bonds for pay are regulated by state law MCL 750.167b.

The rules change from jail to jail. In Oakland County, cash bonds of $10,000 or more go to the court, while a $10 bond fee applies in Wayne County.

Questions and answers

How do I check whether someone is being held in a Michigan jail?

Start with the online roster from the sheriff in the county where the arrest took place. When you don't know the county, search Michigan VINE. You can also call the Michigan VINE line at 1-800-770-7657 at any hour. Use the MDOC OTIS database for someone sentenced to state prison.

How long does it take for a new arrest to appear on a Michigan jail roster?

Oakland County says its online locator might be up to 72 hours behind, and timing varies by county. Wayne County requires people arriving from courts or other agencies to clear the Jail Registry Unit before release. Call the jail's booking desk when a recent arrest isn't showing yet.

Call a bail agent (not the jail)

This line reaches a bail agent who can talk you through a bond in Michigan. It is not the jail and not a government office.
