A Washington inmate search begins with the county or city jail roster for the place where the arrest happened. In Washington, local jails hold new arrests while state prisons hold people serving felony sentences. Was your family member arrested tonight? Start with the local county roster. It can take a few hours for very recent arrests to show online. When the name still isn't listed, phone the jail's booking desk. A staff member can confirm custody by phone.
Washington county jails
In Washington, local detention falls to sheriff's offices, county departments, cities, and regional facilities. To give one example, families can use King County jail locator to find the right holding facility. Other local jails operate close by as well, including Kent City Jail and SCORE, a regional facility based in Des Moines.
- The King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention runs the King County Correctional Facility in Seattle. That department also operates the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent; these 2 adult jails together take countywide felony bookings plus local misdemeanor arrests.
- The Pierce County Sheriff's Office Corrections Bureau operates Pierce County Jail.
- For local bookings, the Spokane County Jail is run by Spokane County Detention Services.
Washington jail rosters
Every Washington county maintains its own online custody list. Search the specific facility the person was taken to. The details on screen vary from county to county.
You can see whether an adult is currently in custody through the King County subject lookup. King County calls this booking number a B/A number, and the lookup lists it too. Sending money or paying bail requires that B/A number. The Pierce County LINX jail roster, on the other hand, uses the county's legal information system. The Spokane County roster and the Snohomish County register each have their own county web portal.
Staff record charges during the jail booking process, before any name appears online. When an arrest happened only a few hours ago, call the jail directly, since new bookings take time to show.
Washington Department of Corrections inmate search
State prisons are run by the Washington State Department of Corrections, which people often call DOC. Local city or county jails aren't run by it. State prison custody can be checked through the Washington State Department of Corrections incarcerated search.
Only turn to the DOC search for someone serving a sentence for a felony in state prison. If county deputies or local police arrested someone tonight, that person won't appear in DOC records. People with new arrests remain at a county or city jail through court dates, bail hearings, and the trial. When the name doesn't appear on the state list, look at the jail roster for the county where the arrest happened.
Washington VINELink
Follow custody changes statewide with Washington VINE. Families and victims can use this free service to check custody status and register for automatic alerts.
All outgoing Washington VINE notifications come from 877-846-3492. To avoid missing a release call, keep that phone number saved in your contacts. You can get free phone support 24/7/365. This system is also linked to local jails. The King County VINE victim notification page has county details you can read. With alerts turned on, still phone the jail to confirm a release before you drive over.
Washington bail bonds
Under RCW 10.21.015, Washington law permits 4 release options before trial. Judges can approve a corporate surety bond, a property bond, a cash bail bond, or a pretrial release program. When a commercial bail bond agency issues a bail bond, that's a corporate surety bond. The agency charges you a nonrefundable fee known as a premium, and in return it guarantees the court the full bail amount.
Chapter 18.185 RCW, along with WAC 308-19-030, sets the rules bail bond agencies and their agents follow. Behind those bonds are corporate sureties, and the state insurance commissioner qualifies them.
The jail windows in King County, the Seattle site and the Kent site, accept bail every day between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. You can pay with cash, a cashier's check, or a money order, but never a personal check. King County and the Pierce County Sheriff's Office both warn that jails never demand bail money by phone call or text.
Questions and answers
How do I check whether someone is in jail in Washington?
Begin with the online roster of the county or regional jail that handled the arrest. Examples are the lookup pages for King, Pierce, Spokane, or Snohomish county. You can also use Washington VINE to check custody status in local jails. For someone already serving a state prison sentence, the Department of Corrections offers a locator.
After an arrest, how long does it take for the name to appear on a Washington jail roster?
The online roster shows a person only once officers have brought them to the facility, booking is done, and detention staff have assigned an identification number, such as the B/A number used in King County. When the name still hasn't shown up online after a few hours, a direct call to the jail's booking window is the next step.
