Start a New Jersey inmate search with the county correctional facility for the arrest location. The statewide New Jersey VINE system is another place to look. People go into county and municipal facilities right after an arrest. The New Jersey Department of Corrections search is only for people held in state prison. Under New Jersey's risk-based release system, courts set release conditions directly, and no commercial bail agents are involved. You'll save time tonight if you match your search to the arrest timeline.
New Jersey county jails
New Jersey has municipal detention facilities and county correctional facilities operating next to the state prisons. Police take someone arrested near you to a county correctional facility or a municipal facility. These local lockups fall under the NJDOC Office of County Services. The office inspects municipal detention facilities and gives every county correctional facility a yearly inspection.
Counties run their own detention operations. When your search is in Salem County, the Salem County Sheriff's Office Department of Corrections operates the Salem County Correctional Facility. You can reach that county's corrections department through the county directory at 856-769-4300.
New Jersey jail rosters
After a local arrest, start with the county's own roster to find someone. Calling the county correctional facility or the municipal detention facility directly works too. When the jail is unknown, New Jersey VINE is the tool to check. Both county jails and state prisons are covered in one search.
You can also call the toll-free VINE support line at 1-877-846-3465 at any hour for help finding someone. In Salem County, you can call the corrections division at 856-769-4300. If the arrest happened in the last few hours, call the jail instead, because the jail booking process takes a while to show on a roster.

New Jersey bail with no bail bondsman
New Jersey gained a risk-based pretrial system plus a speedy trial law on January 1, 2017, through a constitutional amendment voters approved. You won't be hiring a commercial bail bondsman now, because courts no longer use monetary bail as their main approach. A judge looks at each case under N.J.S.A. instead. 2A:162-17, plus N.J.S.A. 2A:162-22. Release on recognizance is granted when a defendant poses little risk and can't afford bail. In other words, the person formally promises to come back to court and pays nothing.
There are 3 main pretrial paths under New Jersey Courts Criminal Justice Reform:
- Conditional release before trial
- Supervision by pretrial services officers after release
- Detention before trial when a defendant's flight or safety risk is serious
